From Oct. 1st to 5th, the head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering Yiming Rong visited the National University of Singapore and the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Professor Rong met with some professors and scholars who were interested in SUSTech, and explored the development of the department of MEE in NUS in detail, meanwhile the professors of both sides exchanged their ideas about the NUS-SUSTech Joint-PhD program.
On Oct.3rd, Professor Rong met with Prof. Qingxian Chen, the Deputy Provost; Prof. Biaowei Shen, Vice Dean of the NUS Polytechnic Institute; Professor Teng-Joon Lim, Associate Dean for Graduate Studies; Mr. Lin Jiamin, Assistant Dean for Chinese Affairs; and Prof. Phan-Tiaen Nhan, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and assistant director of the Department, Zeng Kai Yang associate professor who is mainly in charge of postgraduates affairs. Pro. Rong began with introducing the latest development and construction situation of SUSTech and the Department of Mechanical Engineering in SUSTech, and he expressed his heartfelt acknowledgment to NUS for their support and recognition. The cooperation between NUS and SUSTech is still in hit primary stage, thus to improve and promote the joint programs, both sides need a deep discussion in detail and depth. Prof. Rong and the professors in NUS exchanged their ideas about the NUS-SUSTech PhD Joint Program in focus, including doctoral student source, admission, enrollment procedures etc., and they also confirmed the specific joint training intent with the Department of Mechanical Engineering of NUS.
In the afternoon, Prof. Rong visited the Mechanical Manufacturing team of NUS, and met with Prof. Fu Yingxi, Associate Prof. Lu Wenfeng, Associate Prof. Zeng Kaiyang and visited their laboratory. After that, Prof. Rong inspected the teaching of creative design and practice presided by Associate Prof. Lu Wenfeng in particular. He highly appreciated the teaching strategy of combining teaching with industrial practice, focusing on nurturing the students’ competence of identifying and solving problems. Prof. Rong warmly invited Prof. Lu to call upon the Department of MEE of SUSTech in recent days, and expected him to offer some advice about framing the course of innovative design and field practice.
As the dean of Zhixin College, Prof.Rong always bear the development of the college and the students in mind. With the guidance of the professors in NUS, Prof. Rong visited the Yale-Nus College. They showed Prof. Rong around the classrooms, library, activity rooms and courtyard facilities, and introduced the composition，operation and management of the college in a whole.
On Oct.4th, Prof. Rong called upon Prof. Chen Yiming of NTU, issued a discussion with Prof. Chen about inviting him to be a part-time professor in SUSTech, so as to assist the Department of MEE with constructing the Robotics Lab. During the visit in Singapore, Prof. Rong conducted a deep discussion with many professors, asking their extensive advices for the future planning of the development of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in SUSTech. Prof. Rong sincerely invited the professors in Singapore to visit the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and they looked forward to in-depth cooperation in the future.
