The SUSTech Teams were crowned Champions in the 13th International Underwater Robot Competition, held in Qingdao. Six teams from the Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering at SUSTech won seven awards in total, including the excellent tutor award.
This year, about 60 universities in China and nearly 400 teams competed for the awards.
The competition is divided into different task-groups such as autonomous vision, underwater control, underwater racing, and target grabbing. The autonomous vision group competition involves contests in obstacle avoidance search, image recognition analysis, and underwater motion control.
Prof. Zheng WANG (Mechanical and Energy Engineering) and Research Assistant Prof. Juan YI (Mechanical and Energy Engineering) are the teams' tutors. SUSTech won the champion and the second award in the "Port investigation" project, champion and silver medal award in "Robot fish innovation and development" project, and third awards in the "Searching water pollution source" project.
This International Underwater Robot Competition is co-sponsored by the China Simulation Federation, the International Underwater Robot Alliance, and Qingdao Blue Valley Administration. The International Underwater Robot Competition (URC) is the first and only high-level competition initiated by a university in mainland China.
With the theme of "Ocean robots," the International Underwater Robot Competition promotes the widespread application of the latest information engineering technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics. It contributes to the building of a world scientific and technological power.
