Recently, the 5th IEEE International Conference on Advanced Robotics and Mechatronics,ICARM 2020 was held in Shenzhen. SUSTech student Guang HUANG, graduate of SUSTech-HIT (Harbin Institute of Technology) joint Master program, and Liang MA, PhD Candidate of SUSTech-HIT (Harbin Institute of Technology) joint PhD program from SUSTech Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering won the ICARM 2020 Best Student Paper Award.

Soft exoskeletons can be worn on the human body like suits, which can be used to repair and enhance the human movement ability. It is one of the hot spots in the field of robotics. Due to the acceleration of global aging, the elderly population will increase rapidly in the next 30 years. Soft exoskeletons have a broad application prospect in the innovation of aging science and technology because of its lightweight and good human-robot interaction. However, there are few pieces of research on the stair assisted exoskeleton. The biomechanical characteristics of stair assisted exoskeleton are significantly different from that of walking on the flat ground, which brings challenges to the design and control of stair assisted exoskeletons. Under the guidance of Prof. Chenglong FU, Liang MA made an academic report entitled “a biologically inspired soft exercise for knee extension assistance during stair ascent”.

The IEEE International Conference on Advanced Robotics and Mechatronics (ICARM) is the flagship conference of both IEEE-SMC TC on Bio-mechatronics and Bio-robotics Systems and IEEE-RAS TC on Neuro-Robotics Systems. 125 papers were elected, with an election rate of 46%. ICARM 2020 presents the following awards to honor researchers with outstanding contributions within the scopes of the conference, namely Best Conference Paper Award, Toshio Fukuda Best Paper Award in Mechatronics, Best Paper Award in Advanced Robotics, and Best Student Paper Award. Papers published in the conference are recorded into IEEE Explore and some excellent papers will be recommened to be published in IEEE/CAA Journal of Automatica Sinica after extension.
