Manufacture Extracurricular Activity -- Shenzhen University Metalworking Practice

In the morning of April 9th, 2017, in order to enhance students' hands-on experience and sharpen their understanding of mechanical equipment and manufacture, Professor Huaquan Wang from MEE department has lead a group of students to participate in the metalworking practice activity in Shenzhen University.
Students were separated into two groups. One was assigned to conduct milling and the other group was to conduct lathe milling. The assignment would be exchanged in the next time.
After arriving the destination, safety training was first conducted. Students were taught to operate the machine tools under the supervision of instructors and to report any issue encountered. Before working, students were asked to wear work coats with long sleeves and goggles.
After preparation, teachers begun the introduction on lathe milling tools and milling tools, such as the internal structures and functions. They also emphasized on introducing safety notices in order to prevent any accident. With the help of practical operation, students learnt the instructions rapidly.
Teacher's introduction is only part of the activity and the rest of the operation was to be done by students individually. The introduction was step by step and it would move to the next step only if all students have finished the previous one. Even though demonstration was provided, finishing the entire machining individually was not an easy task. During the operation, students needed to think while operating and carefully finished every step according to the instruction. For example, while milling, it was necessary to first understand the engineering drawings and chose the proper heel blocks to grinded the edges and corners of the work pieces. When they manually located the cutting tool, each cutting depth should be remembered by heart. Replacing the cutting tool and re-clamping the work pieces were common and precision measuring was required in the fine machining step. Applying cooling liquid to the tool blade was also indispensible.
Since it was the first time that students learnt to operate machine tools, they were a bit clumsy at the beginning. However, they operated the tools with extreme caution and became skilled gradually after the first half hour. Even though the operation was not heavy manual work, many students started to sweat when they were doing their job.
After the two-hour operation, students have finished their machining. They were satisfied by their products and exchanged their thoughts and hoped for the next activity.
Students returned to SUSTc after cleaning the lab. The activity was successfully held and thank professor Wang for his recommendation and guidance for this activity. We would like to appreciate the detailed and patient introduction provided by the teachers in Shenzhen University machining labs.
